Repair a cable, connector or circuit board

A poor contact can behave like a much larger fault. Cable breaks, oxidised connectors and cracked solder joints may respond to movement, temperature or pressure and can therefore be difficult to reproduce.

Repair means more than adding fresh solder. First understand the mechanical cause; after repair the connection should be stressed and measured again.

How do I find a cable break?

Measure continuity while gently moving the cable, especially near strain reliefs and connectors. Remember that some cables contain electronics or resistors; a simple resistance test is not always sufficient.

Can I resolder a connector that has come loose from a circuit board?

Sometimes, provided the pads and tracks are still intact and the mechanical load is addressed. If copper has been torn away, reconstruction may be required. Also check whether a broken enclosure will continue to put excessive force on the connector.

When is desoldering better than adding more solder?

When old solder is contaminated, cracked or excessive, or when a component has to be replaced. Remove enough old material first and use appropriate temperature, flux and tools so pads are not damaged unnecessarily.
