Make an enclosure, holder, bracket or adapter

Many technical problems do not need a new device but a connecting part: a holder, cover, bracket, adapter or small enclosure.

Such a part has to do more than fit. Cables must be able to move, screws remain accessible, heat escape and mounting must not damage the existing device.

Questions on this page

Where do I start with the design?

Define attachment points, forces, available space and the parts that must remain accessible. Then measure the surroundings and draw the interfaces before making the outside shape attractive.

How do I choose fasteners?

Consider disassembly, material and load. Threads directly in soft plastic require different choices from a metal threaded insert; wood screws, bolts, clips and adhesive each have different advantages and disadvantages.

When should I make a prototype first?

For almost any part where fit or ergonomics are uncertain. A quick print or simple handmade model can test position and accessibility before the final part is made.

Where can this be made?

3D printing, Metalworking, Woodworking and, where integrated circuitry is involved, Electronics can complement one another.
