Investigate corrosion, contamination or water damage

Water or dirt does not always cause immediately visible damage. Salts and residues can later create leakage currents and corrosion, while aggressive cleaning can damage coatings, labels or sensitive materials.

If damaged electronics are in doubt, do not power them again “just to see whether they still work”. Inspecting and drying first can prevent further damage.

What should I do immediately after water damage?

Remove power and the battery when this can be done safely. Do not leave the device powered unnecessarily. Document where liquid entered and dismantle only as far as is reasonable to assess moisture and contamination.

Is alcohol always the right cleaning agent?

No. Isopropyl alcohol is useful for much electronic work, but not for every plastic, display, coating or type of contamination. First determine what needs to be removed and what material lies underneath.

How do I tell whether corrosion is electrically relevant?

Inspect under magnification and measure continuity, resistance to adjacent nets and power rails. Green or white deposits may look superficial while continuing underneath components.
